adeline - happy

The tablet sketch was supposed to go up on Friday afternoon but LJ was crapping out as I attempted to upload it. I have no idea who the boy snail is; possibly Adeline as a kid? I think I just wanted to doodle a non-specific snail. That's Addy asleep, though.

The other three sketches were inspired by a BareNaked Ladies song (obviously) and an experience at work on Saturday night. Strangely enough, it was not an asshole experience like Adeline has to deal with above -- I've had my share of those working retail, but only one or two since I started working Job 2, which is nice -- but one that made me question the quality of retail salespeople. Let's face it: I know damn well most people who work retail are not working it out of love (I am fortunate that I more or less am; I do quite like the stuff I sell), but still, your job is to know 1) how to deal with people, 2) what you sell and 3) how to sell it.

A young woman came in and was filling out her bridal registry (I knew we had one, this is the first time I'd seen it used) and wanted to put a salad spinner on it. I was cleaning the coffee machines when they asked me about it, my hands full as I headed to the back, but I paused and easily answered, "Yeah, they're all up on the top shelf but I can get it down! Just hang on a sec,"

"We don't want to be a bother!"

Brain explosion, there. Have I mentioned I like working where I work? It's 'cause people like that come in and shop with us.

"Don't worry about it! Just let me get this done first and I'll get it right down," Part of me wanted to add, Because that's my job...never be afraid to ask me (or any retail salesperson, I would hope) to get something down for you.

Which is where my thought came up...I know good customer service hasn't died, but I have to wonder if it's been put away on a shelf somewhere, waiting for someone to find it. Part of it may be my own personal frustration with shopping -- I don't like shopping, I'd rather not be shopping if I can help it. However whenever I go somewhere and need help, I can never find it. So many sales associates/retail slaves are too busy carrying on conversations with friends/coworkers, aimlessly staring into space, out having a smoke, or texting (yeah, I've seen it) to help me. And it bugs me, which makes me feel old: I know your job sucks. I have worked many a retail job, in fact I work one as my second one. They're usually boring and people are crazy and irritating and customers do, indeed, usually suck. I don't expect you to smile or even attempt/feign happiness...just please acknowledge my existence and maybe give me a hand finding an item or getting an item down from the top shelf. I know texting your BFF about tomorrow's hot date is oh-so-important, but you're on the clock. Try to be a bit professional.

And then I feel like a bitch for thinking it. Or a cranky old lady. Back in my day...

Anyway, if Addy ever had a comic of her own, it'd be about her dealing with her retail life with flashbacks speckled through about her childhood and college years and her never ending attempt to get a career in architecture (what she majored in).

If I ever get off my butt and get ANY comic going, though, it'll be an accomplishment of some kind =p
