I do not like fashion. I was trying to find a decent reference for a Little Black Dress and I realized: I don't get it. At all. I paged through various fashion websites, staring at models who really need a sandwich. Models who I assume have no idea what ice cream is. Wearing what looks like garbage bags. Or possibly the interior of a Chrysler Cordoba.

The first doodle is before I went on my fashion-hunting pilgrimage. The other two are not from recent times; I started looking up vintage dresses, back when having hips wasn't a bad thing. Personally I'm a fan of fashions from the 1920s through the 1960s, for varying reasons...one of which probably being "Why the hell can't we still dress like that?"

Anyway, doodles of Caitlin. Trying to get a "Whoa." reaction from the audience ("Oh, wow, she's pretty sexy, actually,"), but unfortunately my skill with fashion negates that, more or less.

Playing with character designs for coworkers of Caitlin's. Part of me wants to make them a species that would seem really odd in a funeral home (a peacock, maybe, or a Yorkshire terrier), but obviously the part of me that won the argument -- this time -- was the one that chose the obvious scavenger species. This is something I'll be playing around with for a bit as aspects of the story develop further. Normally my characters' species has nothing to do with their personality or job; I'm still tossing the ideas around, and I'm finding it a bit...I suppose the word is "cliche."

Speaking of story development, I've been wanting to draw something like this with Dante forever. Cut for a reason. )

I am a creator: an artist, a writer, a storyteller. But sometimes I feel like I'm more like a funnel - someone out there is using me to tell their stories, to put them on paper, to refine them into what they are.

This is a theory that has been around for quite some time; I even have a dog tag that expresses it (given to me by my SO, long before we were a couple -- he's the one that put it into words). Of course, I'm only ever allowed bits and pieces of the story. It makes beginnings and endings a bit of a pain in the ass.

Dante's story, currently titled "Memoirs of Saints & Sinners" is one of my most developed. But it doesn't have an end. The farthest I've ever gotten is Adeline's wedding, where Dante meets back up with his childhood sweetheart, Sarah, and she's engaged and so on. Then the story kind of just peters off into nothingness.

Or at least, it did. Someone let me have what hopefully will be the beginning of an end today.

Meet Caitlin.

And her brothers, who are not a major part of the story but I felt like putting faces to names.

I knew, the moment I drew her, that she was a part of Dante's story. I still don't know really how much of it she will be, but signs are pointing to definite friendship and possible romance, so we'll see what happens...
