Capitol South - Comic Men

Note: I am a comic fan myself, and my SO is a significant comic fan to the point where he can name like, every Marvel villain ever, so Cecilia's words here are not entirely my view.

Though this conversation was inspired by our watching Watchmen tonight, which in and of itself is basically a metaphor for superheroes and comic fans. But there is a point to this sort of thought: I cannot honestly think of a comic where the man is the one calling the shots in the bedroom and he is not a villain or raping the woman in question. Maybe instances in Hellblazer, though John's longest relationships are ones where the woman has full control in the bedroom...of course, as I said, I am not a hardcore comic fan and have not read every comic in existence. Though upon my comments (which were similar to Cecilia's here, though not as openly scathing) tonight, he simply chuckled at my nerve...he certainly didn't object.

Of course, this would bring up the topic of feminism and a woman's place: if the man was the one calling the shots in the bedroom, would it be seen as sexist? Would it be peculiar for a girl to ask a guy to take charge, to push her against the wall/floor/kitchen counter/tabletop and bang her until she cries in joy, screaming as she orgasmed again and again and again? Do comics simply not want to be offensive to women, and in doing so, always put them in charge in the bedroom?

*raises an eyebrow, thinking of the numbers of male fans to female fans* I'm taking a wild guess that that isn't quite the reason. But still. Interesting to ponder over. Sort of wish I'd thought of it for my Women's Psychology class; could've made an interesting paper.

One of the interesting things about Cecilia and Nate's relationship is that they are not dating. I think it fascinates me because most of my male/female couples are. These two are just extremely good friends.

Also, Nate would not actually ever hit a girl...or probably anyone. He can't even kill bugs without feeling twinges of guilt (also he's terrified of spiders, but that's another issue that will make for a few jokes later on).

Tablet practice + practice drawing people. It's finally getting to a point where the stories/dialogues/characters are writing themselves as I'm drawing them when I'm drawing humans; this is a good thing.

Also, I'm taking the idea of making this concept into a comic seriously enough: it was worthy of an icon. Yeeha.

Drawing the Metro station (the ceiling visible in the icon there -- the majority of them are like that) is going to be a bitch =p

Nate is not. Nate's most trustworthy partner so far is his right hand.

It started with a stupid joke...

In all honesty I have no idea where the joke came from; I was driving home and it hit me and I had to draw it. Of course, having started it, I had to work with the characters more -- what little I have of these two needs to be explored further because if I start a webcomic it's probably going to be with them.

Quick character roughs of the two main characters and two side characters, which lead to...

Playing with head shapes and ending up with a story. I love it when that happens! And it's also inspiration to actually get the comic together, if only to get to a point where I can play with the idea and figure out how it happens.

I'd also been having a hard time figuring out what Nate would do for a living, but it somehow occurred to me (I'm not sure how; a combination of music and reading various blogs, perhaps). I'm honestly not sure how Nate's porno stash got in there, or why Nate has a porno stash when he has the internet. But Nate's a strange mix of old school and modern technology, trying his hardest to pretend he's twice his age.

Note To Self For Jokes Later: Nate has to deal with an author/writer who only submits his work as it's done: on post-its, random scraps of paper, composition books, floppy disks, et cetera. And his handwriting is awful and he uses a runny pen, but he's one of their bestsellers...

And then I drew them naked. )
