Unfortunately for me, snake/mammal sex seems kinda kinky. I just like working with interesting body shapes, and snakes definitely qualify; as odd as these situations seem, they're relatively normal in the little world of critters in my head. Notably, though, there are places in parts of the country where interspecies marriage is still frowned upon and hybrids are still considered freaks (any guesses on my inspiration there? We're such a cruel species, aren't we?). My character Richard grew up in one of those places, which is one of the reasons he moved to New York City.

Fletcher's folks again. Drawn in a fit of utter randomness at around 2am this morning.

Fletcher's folks again, with slightly more accurate proportions.

Quick, somewhat half-assed doodle of Fletcher's parents. Notably somewhat half-assed because his dad is not nearly thick enough -- he should be at least as thick around as his wife's waist, and he's not. He should also be a bit longer; in this, he doesn't look all that different from an actual, non-morphic boa constrictor wrapped around a person, whereas if most of him is on the ground, he should be at eye-level with folks...especially his wife, who is rather short.

But oh well, this was mostly for design/color scheme. I will be playing around with it some more before posting anything that qualifies as "final designs."

Notably, Amy has not always had and will not always have that awful '80s hair. This "picture" was taken IN the '80s (probably before Fletch was born) which is why she has it.

I've gotten complaints on my snake characters because they lack arms and legs, too. I draw them this way because snakes do not have arms and legs. I have NO idea why I am comfortable giving snails and catfish limbs but have an issue adding them to snakes. It could have something to do with my lifelong love of the species; they've been one of my favorite animals since I was like, in kindergarten. As the boy noted when I was drawing this, my snakes are "...like that snake from Robin Hood...except without the hat. And the collar." So, yeah. They are anthropomorphic -- they can think and act on those thoughts, which of course is about as human as it is possible to be. They also use their tails as a limb, for opening doors or typing and so on.

But like I said, Michael here is kinda lacking in the "big enough to seem like anything but a prop" department, so I gotta work on that.

The boy and I went strawberry picking on Thursday. I think we were the only adults there who didn't have kids, but that did not stop us from picking a bunch of strawberries. Coming home, I immediately threw together a batch of strawberry ice cream and then pondered what to do with the remaining berries. I want to attempt jam at some point this summer, but there weren't nearly enough for something like that (not to mention I don't have the proper equipment), and I'd already thrown together a rhubarb cake so baked goods were out (the rhubarb cake with a scoop of strawberry ice cream was awesome, by the way)...

And then, of course, the idea of liquor infusions popped up. I was probably poking through a food blog or something and the idea hit me square in the face: strawberry tequila. Liquor infusions are not unlike vanilla extract; in fact, they're exactly the same...they just take considerably less time.

Chopped up the remaining strawberries and tossed them in one of my various canning jars along with an entire bottle of tequila. I'll be giving it a shake every couple days and in two weeks, I'll strain out the strawberries and hey! Deliciousness! Strawberry margaritas, anyone?

Realizing that I also had a bag of limes and the remains of a huge bottle of vodka from my vanilla project, I zested the limes (juicing them and stashing that in the fridge for later) and mixed the zest in with the vodka. Lime vodka, or if I feel like sweetening it in a couple weeks, I could make a lime version of limoncello.

Liquor infusions, folks. My next geeky food obsession?

Good ol' fashioned romance.

Coloring using this method is WAY easier when one of the characters is almost entirely white, I've learned.

This is one of my favorite methods of coloring. I don't do it that often because it is more or less a complete pain in the ass. But since I generally believe the sketch is the best part of my drawings and...well, it's obvious why I like it.

Portrait of Fletcher, self-proclaimed Gonzo journalist, armed with a pen and a cigarette. Yes, he's the kind of guy who still uses an old typewriter, though he does have a computer for the sake of an internet connection (and oddly, he pays all his bills online. No one can quite figure out Fletch's technological standards or limits).

And yes, I know cigarettes don't smoke like that. I just think it looks cool.

I am extrordinarily good at sleeping the day away
I thought with my experience I'd put it on my resume...

Well you done done me and you bet I felt it
I tried to be chill but you're so hot that I melted
I fell right through the cracks
and now I'm trying to get back
Before the cool done run out...

There's a bit of naughtiness here and you can see nipples, but I didn't think it was worthy of a cut...let me know if you think it is and I shall.

Fletcher prefers surrounding himself with times he didn't live in. I couldn't tell you why, just like I can't tell you why I do it -- it's some strange affinity for a time you can't /didn't exist in, the ideals of times gone by.

Also, this is early in Mina and Fletch's relationship; it's impossible for them to have an argument 'cause Fletcher will just start licking and nibbling and rubbing his fingers in certain places and you can't argue with a person who does that, really.

believe in love

Point One: I haven't drawn these two in forever. Fletcher in the driver's seat, Mina in the passenger's. I need to draw them more; they're both fascinating characters.

Point Two: I can't draw cars. Mostly because it's not something I practice drawing regularly and I need to change that. The perspective here sucks -- it's probably hard to tell that Mina's legs are bent and her feet are up on the dashboard, not to mention the car looks huge and it most certainly shouldn't: it's a Datsun 510 (used to belong to Fletcher's uncle, who acquired a new plaything and gifted it to his nephew; rumor is it used to be blue but lordonlyknows...it starts so Fletch doesn't complain).

You know, for all my wanderlust, for all that I enjoy driving -- not to mention a fondness for the design of older vehicles -- I barely ever draw my characters going anywhere in cars. And I don't know if it's because I can't draw cars or just because it's not necessarily a part of the story that needs to be told...unless it's a road trip story. Of course, I suppose movies are the same way: you almost never see people driving unless a plot point is going to happen in the car (same with using the bathroom, but I could rant about movies...) unless it's a road trip movie where the entire point is driving. I guess it's something you really don't think about...but I only got my license a little less than two years ago; it's something I ponder pretty regularly when I'm driving around.

Note to Self: Draw more cars.
